The Lord’s Day

July 25, 2010

Reflection

We must always be accepted for Christ’s sake, or we cannot ever be accepted at all.  This is not true of us only “when we believe.”  It is just as true after we have believed.  It will continue to be true as long as we live.  Our need of Christ does not cease with our believing; nor does the nature of our relation to Him or to God through Him ever alter, no matter what our attainments in Christian graces or our achievements in Christian behavior may be.

It is always on His “blood and righteousness” alone that we can rest.

Call to Worship                                                                                                 Psalm 96: 1-6

Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

Our Prayers to God

Hymn of Praise

Invocation (followed by the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen

Call to Confession                                                                                               Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Prayer of Confession

Father, we come to you this morning as people who need to be renewed.  We need to be made whole.  We confess that we need You to heal us for we cannot heal ourselves.

We confess our wandering hearts.  We run after acceptance, prestige, wealth, order, pleasure and novelty in a desperate effort to heal our hearts.  None of these can help us, and none can make us whole.  Yet we are slow to learn.  Forgive us, we pray.

We confess our faithless hearts.  We have looked for redemption everywhere but in your arms.  We haven’t looked there, because we doubt Your love for us.  Forgive us, we pray.

Now, O Lord, accept our confession and draw us near.  We ask this not because we deserve it, or even because of the honesty of our confession, but for the sake of Jesus.  You rejected Him, the innocent, in order to embrace us, the guilty.  In His name we pray. Amen.

Silent Confession

Call to Confession                                                                                 2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Songs of Renewal

How Great Is Our God

The splendor of the King, clothed in majesty

Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice

He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide

And trembles at His voice, and trembles at His voice

Chorus

How great is our God, sing with me

How great is our God, all will see

How great, how great is our God

Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands

Beginning and the End, beginning and the End

The Godhead, Three in One, Father, Spirit, Son

The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb

Chorus

Name above all names…Worthy of all praise

My heart will sing how great is our God

Name above all names…Worthy of all praise

My heart will sing how great is our God

Chorus

 God of Wonders

Lord of all creation, of water, earth and sky

The heavens are Your tabernacle.  Glory to the Lord on high.

Chorus

God of Wonders beyond our galaxy.  You are holy, holy.

The universe declares Your majesty.  You are holy, holy.

Lord of heaven and earth (Lord of heaven and earth)

Lord of heaven and earth (Lord of heaven and earth)

Early in the morning, I will celebrate the light;

And when I stumble in the darkness, I will call Your name by night.

God of Wonders beyond our galaxy.  You are holy, holy.

The universe declares Your majesty.  You are holy, holy.

Lord of heaven and earth (Lord of heaven and earth)

Lord of heaven and earth (Lord of heaven and earth)

Hallelujah!  to the Lord of Heaven and Earth (4x’s)

Repeat Chorus

Confession of Faith                                                                                  The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN.

Meditation & Response

Guidelines for Reception of Communion

Communion, also called The Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and with their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with His people, the church.

Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing

If you are not able to receive Communion, please use this time to meditate on one of the following…

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life.  Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so.  If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are.  Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of Belief

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.  I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life.  Knowing that You have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment

Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church.  Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit.  Amen.

Sermon Text

Genesis 28

So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.  3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham." 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman," 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.  8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.

10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.

11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it." 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear

21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."

IGNITE Calhoun County…Several  pastors in the area have been meeting together and praying that God would build the unity of His Church in Calhoun County through periodically serving the people in our community in various ways.   We're calling our group "IGNITE Calhoun County," and crafting our strategies based on a model taught by Perimeter Church in Georgia.  Our first "Big Serve" day will be held on Saturday, August 14.  We will target 5-10 local ministries to serve.  The following Sunday afternoon, August 15, we will have a joint worship service in order to thank God for moving in our hearts to display His heart to our community and to encourage one another.  During July, people from our churches are being asked to sign up in order to participate in the "Big Serve."  Look for the sign up sheets in the narthex.  More details to follow.

Our Missionaries and Ministries

The Mission of Faith Presbyterian Church is...

To promote a passion for the Glory of God,

And the joy that comes from knowing Him through the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Our Vision is to become...

A fellowship of believers who are experiencing the transforming power of the Gospel

And are Instruments of Change in the lives of others

The Presbyterian Church in America is …

… a “Scriptural Denomination” which seeks to be scriptural in both its teaching and its government.

We seek to be biblical in our teaching.  We earnestly strive to follow Christ and His Apostles.  We are “Reformed” because we trace our roots to those in the reformation who initiated the return to the teaching of the apostolic church.  We also believe the purest and most consistent expressions of biblical teaching are found in the great confessions of the early Reformed churches, particularly the Westminster Confession of Faith with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms.

This means we believe in the Trinity.  There is one God who exists eternally in three Persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  These three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.

We believe the Bible is the written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts.  The Bible is our infallible and divine authority in all matters of faith and life.

We believe that all men are sinners and are completely unable to save themselves.  There is nothing we can do in ourselves to gain God’s favor.   Therefore, we believe in salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone.

We believe in God’s sovereign grace in the salvation of men.  God saves His people and draws them to Christ through the Holy Spirit.  The Spirit convinces us of our sin, enlightens our minds and changes our wills, enabling us to embrace Christ as He is offered in the Gospel.  Because God has commanded us to preach His message to all, we call on people everywhere to repent and trust in Christ.

We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, Who became man and lived and died and rose again to atone for the sins of those who trust Him alone for their salvation.  Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man.

We believe the Holy Spirit gives Christians the daily strength and wisdom they need to walk according to His will and to grow in holiness.

We believe that Jesus Christ shall return personally, visibly, and bodily to judge all mankind and to receive His people to Himself.

We also seek to be biblical in our government.  The form of church government we believe is most biblical is called “Presbyterian.”  This means the local churches are governed by “presbyters,” or elders who are elected by the people.  This was the kind of government the New Testament Church enjoyed (for instance, see Acts 20:17; Titus 1: 5-9).  It has been the form followed by the great Reformed and Presbyterian branches of Christendom since the days of John Calvin in Europe and John Knox in England and Scotland.

There are two kinds of elders:  Teaching Elders (who are pastors) and Ruling Elders (who are ordained laymen).  The Elders of each local congregation form a “Session.”  This Session is entrusted with the spiritual oversight of its congregation.

Representatives from the session along with the ordained ministers of each of the churches in a given geographical area compose the “presbytery.”  The presbytery has oversight of the ministries of those churches.  Through the presbytery, the work of many churches is coordinated and their combined efforts enable them to extend the Kingdom of Christ much farther than would otherwise be possible.

The local churches also send commissioners—elders and ministers—to the highest court of the church, the “General Assembly.”  The assembly meets annually and enables all the churches to have a voice guiding the spiritual and practical affairs of the entire denomination.
